Sun Shelter, Pier 54, NYC(coll: J. Benyamin)Shelter came to be understood as the space that exists between the projector (sun) and the projection (shadow or light on a surface). The nature of the projection depends on the intermediary device, a filter that manipulates the light. For this space to be simultaneously a shelter to and from the sun a variety of "slides" (shading devices) were designed. The project was conceived as a series of games. Each game began with a set of rules for achieving its present goal, derived from the result of the previous game. This broke the process into parts, allowing the project never to be designed as a singular whole. |
